What is Stroke and What Can Help Prevent or Recover a Stroke?

Everyone in this world needs to be physically, psychologically and mentally healthy but as the world is progressing we are facing many problems with respect to health. Due to our sedentary life style we are experiencing diseases from acute to chronic. The most common disease in developing countries is stroke. About 80 % of people are suffering from this ailment. Before talking about symptoms we should be aware about stroke.


Generally stroke is reduction or interruption of blood flow in the brain. It may be fatal depending upon the condition of stroke.


Stroke may affect person in three ways.

  1. Firstly either it is cause of blockage that is called ischemic stroke.
  2. Secondly rupturing of blood vessel which is called brain hemorrhage.
  3. Thirdly is cause of blood clot appearance named as TIA (Transient ischemic Attack).



The best method to spot a stroke is FAST method which involves face drooping, Arm weakness, difficulty in speech and Time (Time to call your Doctor).


Symptoms can vary from person to person. For instance

  • Dizziness
  • Severe headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Balance and coordination problem
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Problem in swallowing food

And paralytic attacks are the common risk factors of this disease. Stroke affects the most parts of the body resulting in weakness of leg or arm blurred vision and the problem understanding the speech. In some cases a person may feel trouble in walking and seeing either from one eye or both.

Recovery from strokes can also be determined by the type of stroke you are affected. For instance in TIA (Transient ischemic Attack) the patient may recover within 24 hours, in some other cases patient will totally recover in 3 weeks. The factors which lead to the increase likely hood of both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke may include smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity, and cholesterol level, intake of alcohol, stress and diabetes. These symptoms may be different from individual to individual. Every person may experience the different symptoms depending upon the various factors.


Treatment of stroke is vary from person to person. Moreover if a person seeks the doctor immediately then there would be the better chances of a speedy recovery. A person should be hospitalized as soon as possible especially in intensive care unit for the treatment.

On the other hand if a person is hit by a light stroke he /she should be advised to take a complete bed rest and limit their physical activities

  • Thrombolysis is done in acute stroke if no contraindication and if patient is within 4 to 5 hrs.
